There's nothing more worrisome than looking up to see water dripping from the ceiling in your home. You may even see brown spots where water has slowly seeped into the drywall and plaster over time.
It's the kind of water damage that can cause a visceral reaction, leaving you wondering just how much worse things are behind the ceiling or up in the attic.
Dealing with the water damage starts by finding the source of that ceiling leak and fixing it. But, you'd be surprised at just how many things can cause water damage to appear!
Storm Damaged Roof
One of the causes of roof leaks that many Atlanta homeowners consider first is storm damage. When your shingles are lifted or pulled completely off that roof, it can leave openings for rain to seep into the attic and eventually reach the ceilings in your home. There may even be small amounts of water damage in the attic that you aren't aware of yet. Because only a small amount of water is leaking into the roof over time.
When storm damage is bad enough, your roof may not be fixable. Or, the cost of repairs would be as much as a roof replacement. So, many homeowners simply opt to get a new roof to fix the leaky ceiling and ensure their property can stand up to future storms.
Old Roof Shingles
If you have an asphalt roof that is more than 20 years old, it won't provide the same level of protection against wind and rain as a newer roof. Over time, the shingles can dry out, lose their protective stone grit, or even come loose from the roof.
Very old roofs may even have damaged or rotting roof decks. You may see a noticeable dip in the roof where the decking is starting to sink, and even see rainwater pooling up there.
Overflowing Gutters
Sometimes, your gutters can overflow and leak rainwater into the roof or behind your siding. Signs of this kind of damage are usually water leaks or stains near an outside wall. You may also be able to spot the overflowing or damaged section of the gutter from outside your home.
A Poorly Ventilated Attic
If your attic isn't properly ventilated, moisture can build up inside. This moisture can come from humidity in the air, moist air escaping from improperly vented dryers and bathroom fans, and small amounts of rainwater seeping inside through cracks and openings.
Attic condensation can form on the rafters, the underside of the decking, and on the attic insulation. Eventually, it seeps through the ceiling and into the walls.
Openings Around Roof Penetrations
Water entering around roof penetrations like vents, fans, and chimneys is one of the most common causes of roof leaks. Most of the openings around these features are covered by roof flashing, which is a metal sheet that keeps water and pests out of the attic. However, flashing can rust or wear out over time. Eventually, the wear is bad enough that water comes in every time it rains.
